gamifying maori heritage through immersive, interactive experiences

The Warahoa.

Waharoa is a fun, transformative game that shares stories, language, and history.

Arterra Play delivers a new transformative game, Warahoa, designed to support Indigenous cultural preservation by providing an engaging, interactive platform for storytelling, language, art, and history.

ABOUT The play

Waharoa, derived from te reo Māori (the Māori language), means "gateway" and symbolises the entrance to a Marae—a communal or sacred meeting space.

The name reflects the game's purpose as a digital gateway to learning and preserving Māori culture and traditions. Māori are the Indigenous people of Aotearoa (Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand).

This project is connected to the Sydney Marae Alliance's initiative to build Australia's first Māori Cultural Centre, which aims to offer cultural education, social support, and community events.
